The action in The Light Fantastic picks up immediately following the events in The Colour of Magic; Rincewind has fallen off the edge of the world, but lodged in his mind is one of the eight spells of the Octavo, the most powerful book of magic in the discworld. To prevent its loss, reality is readjusted, and Rincewind finds himself in a gingerbread house.
Meanwhile, Death has informed the magicians at Unseen university that a red star is going to destroy the world unless the eight spells are read out. Thus starts an incredible journey where Twoflower and Rincewind travel through a Druid’s ceremony, Death’s domain (quite literally), and a magical shop which deposits them back in Ankh-Morpork.
An ambitious and scheming magician at the university attempts to read the seven remaining spells in the Octavo, but opens the dungeon dimensions instead. Rincewind and Twoflower manage to defeat the magician, close the dungeon dimensions and read out all eight spells. This causes the approaching red star to split and birth eight baby turtles, who follow their mother, the great A’tuin, safely away from the discworld.
Outrageously funny and chock-full of hidden innuendoes and subtle tributes to a whole plethora of fantastic worlds, (the most obvious being the aging barbarian Cohen, a tribute to Conan) the book is a delight to read and keeps the reader hooked right up to the end. Excellent stuff.
